1.

Evaluation & Recommendation

The first step in the therapy process is to determine whether or not there is a need for occupational therapy services. A formal evaluation will utilize both standardized assessments as well as clinical observations to assess a child’s current level of function. This process typically takes about an hour.

Following the evaluation, a formal write-up will be completed and a parent conference will be conducted. During the parent conference, the therapist will review results from the evaluation including the child’s strengths and weaknesses. Recommendations for therapy including frequency and duration will be discussed. The therapist and family will also collaborate on a set of goals for the child. Formal therapy sessions can be scheduled at this time.

2.

Therapy Sessions

Formal therapy sessions will be carried out as agreed upon in the parent conference. Therapy sessions will be unique and designed to target the specific areas of concern for the child. Sessions are typically 45 minutes to an hour depending on the child/family and will be carried out in the child’s home or agreed upon location (park, grocery store, pre-school, etc…).

3.

Re-evaluation/Discharge

Depending on a variety of factors such as the child’s rate of progress and insurance, a re-evaluation will be completed between 6 months and a year. The re-evaluation is similar to the initial evaluation; a standardized assessment and a goal check will be completed to measure progress and determine if there is an ongoing need for therapy.

It is important to remember that each child will progress at a different rate depending on age, diagnosis, attendance rate, etc… Typically, children are discharged from occupational therapy services when standardized test scores are at an average range and goals have been met.
